Mulatto's Dilemma
A stage play about a mixed race woman living in the roaring 1920s, Mulattos Dilemma additional show dates are August 5, 2008 at the Complex theatre, 6476 Santa Monica Blvd at Cole Street. Mulattos Dilemma won the 2008 African American Playwrights Exchange Award for Artistic Excellence and was featured in the NAACP Theatre Awards festival. Inspired by Edith Wharton's House of Mirth, Mulatto's Dilemma is an award-winning stage play about a mixed race woman who lived in the 1920s. Disillusioned with the Jim Crow South, Annique Brick dumps her fiance Pierre DuPont and travels to Washington, DC to ask her French diplomat Uncle LeRoi for assistance. After being rejected by her step aunt Mrs. LeRoi, Annique is hired by nouveau riche businesswoman Mrs. Jones who whisks her away to the Harlem Renaissance. The flapper girl world in New York dazzles Annique but the wavering bi-racial grows weary of race radicals and moves to France to live with her Aunt Agnes and Uncle Claude where she meets a handsome painter. Instead of marrying, she returns to Harlem only to be seduced by the husband of one of her Harlem society friends. Annique seeks refuge in the church so as not to be marginalized and labeled an adulterous woman. Actors include Playwright/Performer Juliette Fairley, Anadel Baughn, Sebastien Cuk, Pierre DuLat and Tina King.
