Silindro Pilipino Project with Carlos Zialcita and Friends
The Silindro Pilipino Project will highlight the use of the harmonica or silindro in Tagalog, in pre-Colonial, Colonial, and post-Colonial music. Pre-Colonial music in the Philippines features the use of the Kulintang Gongs in an ensemble setting as well as the use of stringed instruments like the kudyapi and the hegelong. The Colonial period features the classic Spanish traditions on the guitar and piano along with the timeless Kundimans or Filipino love ballads. The Colonial period also features the American contribution which notably includes blues, swing, and jazz. The Post-Colonial period is all the music created today that is best described as "modern" or "contemporary" and includes World Music, R&B, Soul, Funk, Rap, Hip Hop, and Spoken Word.

All of these genres will be explored as part of the Silindro Pilipino Project is a number of activities including concerts, presentations, and workshops. The first concert is on Saturday October 13th at the Oakland Asian Community Center located in Oakland's Chinatown.

The Project includes Carlos Zialcita along with Bo Razon, Chris Trinidad, Ron Quesada, Lydia Neff, Raul Ramirez, Aireene Espiritu and Richard Daquioag. Zialcita is the Recipient of a 2018 Individual Artist Grant from the City of Oakland.
