Thomas Shoebotham plays Bach Cello Suites
The 6 Suites for Solo Cello by J. S. Bach are some of the most iconic works in the entire cello literature. They are enjoyed by music lovers around the world for their tremendous emotional depth, which is created by the simplest of means, a single unaccompanied cello. Along with the works for solo violin, these Suites display some of Bach's most subtle and refined compositional skills, particularly his ability to create the feeling of multiple parts sounding together, even when only a single line of music from one instrument is being played.
On November 3rd, noted local cellist Thomas Shoebotham will perform the first three Suites on a recital at First Lutheran Church, in downtown Palo Alto. Mr. Shoebotham has taught and performed on the cello in the Bay Area for the past 20 years. In past seasons he made concerto appearances with the Oakland Civic Orchestra, Kensington Symphony, and Palo Alto Philharmonic, and given solo and chamber music recitals in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, New Mexico, Illinois, and New York. Mr. Shoebotham plays a 2004 Anthony Lane cello, which won a silver medal for tone at the 16th annual Violin Society of America competition in Portland, Oregon in the fall of 2004.
He has taught in many public and private settings, including several elementary and high schools, colleges, the Music in Schools Foundation, and private studios, for students in a variety of age ranges. Also a noted conductor, he has directed performances for a number of groups, including Emerald City Opera, Opera San Jose, Berkeley Opera, Peninsula Symphony, West Bay Opera, Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra, Albuquerque Philharmonic, and Palo Alto Philharmonic.
