Bio-Intensive Garden Season Extension & Farmers for America Film Screening
Description:
Join Stephen Walach at the Friends Academy school garden for a workshop on getting the most out of your vegetable garden. For the past three years the Friends Academy Garden has averaged more than 7,000 lbs of produce on 1/11th of an acre. Most of the food is donated to local food pantries. Steve will present his approach to achieving high yields in small spaces, including triple cropping, crop spacing, fertility approaches, and crop rotations. Particular focus will be given to garden-scale season extension methods that allow the garden to keep going into the frosty days, even without expensive infrastructure. Participants will have a chance to tour the garden and participate in setting up simple low tunnels. Stephen Walach is an accomplished teacher of organic gardening at North Dartmouths Friends Academy. The garden has received numerous awards and grants for its educational programming and its donation of food to pantries and soup kitchens. In addition to teaching kids about gardening and English, he regularly lectures on high-productivity gardening with NOFA/Mass and other farming, gardening and horticultural organizations. Food Tasting and Screening of Farmers for America
Local food tasting by Aaron DeRego, chef at The Back Eddy.
About the film: Who will feed us? This is the question posed in this new documentary film by Graham Meriwether (maker of American Meat). The average age of the U.S. farmer is 60. Half of America's farmland is going to change hands in the next 12 years. 20% of our food is imported. This is the story of young people who are stepping up. A panel discussion with the film director and local farmers will follow the film.
Participants may register separately or together for the film and workshop.
