Barnard, VT September 21, 22, 23 The Surrealist Cabaret at Feast and Field Market
The Royal Frog Ballet returns to Feast and Field Market this fall with their Surrealist Cabaret, a glittering, contemplative, and hilarious performance set in the hills and dells of Barnard at sunset. The outdoor performance and installation event walks the audience through farm landscape where they encounter a surreal collection of short stories, dance, installation pieces, and roving characters that explore and celebrate themes of season, place, and what it means to be human in these times. It is a folky, comedic, and deeply thought-provoking evening for all ages. Outdoor performances of The Surrealist Cabaret will take place at Feast and Field Market in Barnard, VT, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday September 21, 22, 23 . The tour continues to Park Hill Orchard in Easthampton, MA Friday through Sunday on October 12, 13, 14 and October 19, 20, 21. All performances begin promptly at 5:00 pm. Please arrive early. Founded eleven years ago in Amherst, MA as an outdoor works-in-progress showing for a group of friends, The Surrealist Cabaret has turned into a wild celebration of season and landscape, death and regrowth, stories and community, featuring collaborating artists from across the country. The event delights and befuddles with swarms of dancing skeletons, wind swept poets, moving sculpture, sequined parades, illuminated puppets, costumed musicians, and more. Tucked throughout the farm landscape, the characters and stories ooze out of the fields as if they were always there, just under the layer of our everyday routines: magical, luminescent, and just a dash of spooky. Each year, artists in the collective create individual acts for The Cabaret based on a common theme and weave them together to create a bizarre smorgasbord of style, aesthetic, and metaphor; Like a good circus, there is always something for everyone!
The Royal Frog Ballet is a collective of performance and visual artists, who collaborate to create landscape based work that blends ritual and humor to create a wacky brand of conceptual folk art built for fields, puddles and woodlands. They take inspiration from season, magic, and the everyday. Founded in western Massachusetts, they now rest their heads across the nation, but come together to create work several times a year.
