Useful and Necessary Ingredients
To the ladies of America is this little work dedicated. This work is full from start to finish of useful and necessary information for women, including the secret of youth, beauty and health. It also contains a list of all the poisons and their antidotes.
In an era when a womans time and attention were to be occupied by her husband and household, Charlotte and Emma aspire to be elegant, economical, and enlightened wives. However, the paths of their pursuits are polluted and poisoned leaving them desperate for relief. In in ironic twist of fate they will use the social structures meant to subdue them to flip the status quo.
Useful and Necessary Ingredients is a fast-paced experimental play which steps into the minds of two women of the 1930s, as they drift mysteriously between memory, desire, and immediate experience. Explore scientific and social knowledge inherited through generations of women regarding food, flora, and fellowship. Inspired by three texts: A Thousand Ways to Please a Husband, Home Economics: Vintage Advice and Practical Science for the 21st-Century Household, and The Ladies book of Useful Information.
Presented by Hannah Grimm and Alicen Moser at The Intersect Arts Center, Useful and Necessary Ingredients will be performed on the following dates: September 21, 22, 27, 28, 30 at 8:00pm.
