MMA Improv - Greatest (September Show) of All Time!
Come and have a fun evening with MMA Improv, the improv group that makes you "Tap out with laughter"! This all-Anchorage troupe uses audience suggestions to create scenes on the spot--and is doing it again on Fri., September 28th.
MMA (Mostly Melanin Arts) performs improv live onstage at least once a month at Out North, now located at 333 W. 4th Ave. in downtown Anchorage. Every scene has never been seen before (and probably never again), and is based on your suggestions-making for a great night of creativity, laughter and surprises.
MMA Improv players create scenes using a range of improvisation games. These are the same kinds of games made popular by the U.S. TV show "Whose Line is it Anyway?"(originally hosted by Drew Carey on ABC -- and later revived with host Aisha Tyler on The CW network.)
In fact, improvisational theater has been around for a while. In recent history, drama games have been long used to train those in the theater, from professional actors to young children. Many of the games we play are the same kinds that helped train some of the greatest comics and comedic/sketch actors of our time.
The MMA Improv troupe, which formed in late 2017, includes: Darryl Akins (founder), Sierra Alexis, Lord Zilverbakk Omega Prime (Jamal Baskerville), Jana Lage, Corinthia Rabb McCoy, Michael Mason, Sunni Mebane, Sonya Senkowsky, Dave Souza and Briana Marie Thibodeaux. Joseph Robinson has moved out of state, but if he comes back, we'll surely try to talk him into playing, too! (Those onstage for any given show vary based on availability.)
It's all presented by Obsidian Moon Entertainment, a nonprofit theater organization dedicated to providing opportunities for local performers as well as onstage representation for people of color in Alaska.
Some notes:
Leave the kids at home, please! (The show's usually not that raunchy, but anything can happen, so it's definitely not for children.)
The theater opens to the public at 7:30, but the show doesn't start until 8 p.m.
No alcoholic beverages or food are served; we recommend you have a nice dinner first, then drop by.
Theatre entrance is located on C near 4th Avenue. LOOK FOR THE BIG MMA IMPROV BANNER ON THE FENCE!
Street parking (free after 6) and inexpensive pay lots available nearby.
