CUBANIA: Art Opening & Cultural Evening
Anaya Latin Dance presents
CUBANIA: Cuban Dance Heritage Event Series
in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month
September 22nd & September 29th in Anchorage, Alaska

Saturday, September 22nd at the Writers Block Café:
ART OPENING AND CULTURAL EVENING

7 pm - 9:30 pm: CONFERENCE, PERCUSSION, POETRY & CUBAN CUISINE
$35 per seat (advance purchase)
We will hold a short conference about Cuban music and dance with Anaya Latin Dance and special guest Esteban Isnardi. We will talk about Latin musics roots in Cuba, the influence of Cuban musicians globally, longstanding patterns and current trends in Cuban music and how dancers can recognize them and react, and how this thing popularly known as salsa is danced all around the world. Esteban is the author of Le monde autour de la salsa (El mundo a través de la salsa, The World Through Salsa), a memoire of his experiences, and Borrador Para Bailador, a book of poems about Cuban dance, among others.
Enjoy live percussion and trumpet while viewing the artwork, as well as a live poetry performance and door prizes. Cuban buffet (catered by the Writers Block Café) available for conference participants and drink ticket included.

9:30 pm - 11:30 pm: SOCIAL DANCING
$10 suggested donation for those not attending conference, to support Anaya Latin Dance and the Writer's Block Café.
Enjoy an exhibit of Esteban Isnardis artistic caricatures of important Cuban musicians as well as low-key social dancing with Cuban music.
Beer, wine, and great mojitos with locally fermented (wine-based) rum and fresh mint available as well as numerous non-alcoholic drinks and Cuban/international food to order.

This event is also an inaugural fundraiser for Anaya Latin Dance, a new dance company in Alaska focusing on the rich Cuban roots of Latin dances.

The Writers Block Café & Bookstore is a new (2018) bookshop-café on Spenard. The Block is striving to maintain and acquire a bilingual stock of books.

A collection of works by Esteban Isnardi, entitled Grandes Músicos Cubanos y Maestros de Bailes Cubanos de Ayer y de Hoy, will be on display at the Writers Block through mid-October as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

BOTH EVENTS ARE ALL AGES!
This event is succeeded by Cubania: All Day Dance Workshops & Party on the following Saturday, September 29th.
