Evelyn Harris and Marcia Gomes Perform at TreeCat Cafe
Vocalists, Evelyn Harris and Marcia Gomes, perform at the youth-run TreeCat Café on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 6:30 pm at the Treehouse Community at Easthampton Meadows, 1 Treehouse Circle Easthampton, Mass. The concert is a fundraiser for Syrian women and children and proceeds will go to NuDay Syria, an international relief organization providing humanitarian aid to mothers and children both inside Syria and displaced from Syria in the bordering areas.
Evelyn Harris is an artist, performer, Grammy-nominated composer, arranger, and former member of the internationally acclaimed African American womens a capella ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock. Harris has dedicated her voice to giving depth and meaning to an extensive array of musical styles, creating stirring interpretations of African-American traditional and contemporary material, freedom songs from around the world, jazz, pop, rock 'n' roll, gospel, and blues. Her compositions include State of Emergency, from the groups album Live at Carnegie Hall (1988 Grammy nomination), and My Lament. She recorded and co-produced 10 of the ensembles albums on the Warner Brothers, Redwood, and Flying Fish labels.
Harris directs the Kuumba Womens Choir in Northampton and VOICES of New Africa House at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Harris taught courses in African American music in schools throughout the area, including the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts High School, MacDuffie School, Stoneleigh-Burnham School, Smith College, Mt. Holyoke College, Westfield State College, and University of Massachusetts, Amherst. During the summer, she is a vocal instructor at the Jane Hanson Vocal Music Academy and the Institute for the Musical Arts Rock 'n' Roll Girls Camp.
Harris also performs with John Caban and David Rodriguez as part of the American blues, gospel, and soul group, StompBoxTrio.
Marcia Gomes is a jazz, R&B, Latin and gospel-influenced vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. She is a Cleo Laine vocal scholarship recipient and graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in voice and songwriting. She studied classical and jazz guitar privately.
Gomes performed at Ryles, Club Passim, Club 1369, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Augusta Savage Gallery at UMass Amherst, the Arts Block in Greenfield, and Gateway City Arts in Holyoke, MA, among other venues. Marcia teaches voice at the Institute for the Musical Arts summer rock camp for girls. When she is not writing or performing music, she teaches middle school English with an arts and social justice focus.
Since moving to the Pioneer Valley from Boston, Gomes has developed an enthusiastic local following. Ken Maiuri of The Daily Hampshire Gazette writes that Gomes calls to mind such 70s greats as Joni Mitchell, Phoebe Snow and Stevie Wonder. Jazz vocalist, Samirah Evans, describes Gomes singing by exclaiming, Marcia's voice soars with effortless grace, with a lovely tonal quality that is breathtaking. Evelyn Harris, vocalist and Grammy-nominated composer, proclaims, Her talent and musicianship shone through her compositions and her use of interesting chord structures has made me one of her biggest fans and I feel honored to have her in our community.
The TreeCat Café is a monthly cafe and performance venue managed by youth who have experienced foster care who live at the Treehouse Community and participate in the HEROES Leadership Project. The TreeCat Café provides high school and college-aged Treehouse and HEROES youth with opportunities to take on new leadership responsibilities and develop the confidence and skills to run their own business. They do this with the support of local business owners and elders of the Treehouse Community, who offer their expertise and mentor youth in entrepreneurial skills.
Soup from the cookbook, Soup for Syria, will be served at the event. Soup for Syria includes recipes from acclaimed chefs and cookbook authors from around the world who have joined food relief efforts to alleviate the suffering of Syrian refugees. The book will also be available for purchase and proceeds from the book will also be donated to NuDay Syria.
Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door for general public, $10 for students, and $5 for Treehouse community members. Light meal included. Reservations are required. Table seating is limited.
