Elwood P. Dowd and his sister, Veta Louise Simmons, couldnt be more different. Elwood is carefree, affable, and not one to try to impress his fellow men (and women). Veta, on the other hand, is a high strung perfectionist trying to move another rung up the social ladder. Veta finds Elwood a down right embarrassment, especially when he introduces everyone he meets to his invisible (to everyone but Elwood) friend, Harvey, whom he describes as a six-foot, one-and-one-half inch tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit.
After his behavior at a garden party at her home, Veta decides she must commit him to a sanitarium. When she goes to make the arrangements to have him committed a comedy of errors ensues. Veta is committed instead, Elwood loses track of Harvey and the fun begins.
