High Tunnel Production & Fertility - Boosting Growth with Balance Beyond Compost
Fall is a time of transition in the hoop house as well as in the fields and forests-- summer crops are declining, but still being harvested, while growers must think ahead to the winter crop that will take their place.
What kind of fertility considerations should farmers keep in mind at this time? What is the best timing for fall soil and tissue testing, and how do we best amend soil that is transitioning from a heavy cucurbit or solanaceous crop to a fall or winter crop of greens or overwintered roots?
In this 2-hour workshop, local soil fertility expert Derek Christianson of Brix Bounty farm will cover the specialized fertility requirements of high tunnel soils, with a focus on seasonal transitions and yearly planting rhythms at Brix Bounty Farm. Derek will get into detail on crop-specific nutrient needs, fertigation and foliar applications for tunnels.

Derek Christianson is the owner-operator of Brix Bounty Farm in Dartmouth MA. He is a regular educator for NOFA/Mass and other agricultural organizations on soil fertility, crop health, farm business management, and other topics. He currently serves as a project consultant for the Dartmouth YMCA  Sharing the Harvest Community Farm, the town of Dartmouths Agricultural Commission, and the Bionutrient Food Association board. Derek has been growing veggies in the Northeast since 2001, with about 10 years experience growing in tunnels.

Brix Bounty Farm is a direct market vegetable farm primarily serving Dartmouth and New Bedford. The farm markets through a roadside stand, Summer & Winter CSA and one market. The farm team (2 full-time and 2-4 part-time) currently cultivate about ~7 acres and manage 2 passive fieldhouses, using no electric ventilation.
