Bamaya
Tiyumba Drum and Dance Company presents Bamaya on July 21 at 7PM! Join us for an evening of African drumming and dancing with emphasis on a traditional Ghanaian drum and dance called Bamaya. Bamaya is ages old and known from young to old in Tamale, northern Ghana.
Master Drummer, Choreographer and founder of Tiyumba, Fatawu Sayibu, originates from Tamale, Ghana and brings stories, traditions and the spirit of African drum and dance to Minnesota. Bamaya is a drum and dance from his tribe, the Dagbamba tribe, in Ghana. Over the last few months, he has led dancers and drummers in his company and local community in learning how to drum, dance and make the costumes associated with this traditional dance. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience first hand the lively, colorful and spirit rich rhythms of the Dagbamba people.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
