Moveable Feast loves Anthony Bourdain.
"Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble taquerias mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head? I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once." -Anthony Bourdain

In 2015 Tim and I hopped on the back of a motorcycle to wander around the jungles of northern Thailand. We had long since lost any signal when we scooted down a long dirt road in the last light of day, miles and miles from any town, and I was positive that we were lost forever. Finally, we came across the farm where we'd planned on spending the night, and the farmer welcomed us to his table under the stars. Over veggies grown a few feet from us and plenty of local liquor, we broke bread that night with strangers from around the world. Our farmer chef told stories about his days in the Thai military, we shared cigarettes with a Finnish videography team, and oh: we also met Johnny, a wandering midwest boy who became our Moveable Feast chef the next morning.

When Tim and I started Moveable Feast Retreats, we had voices like Anthony Bourdain's in our heads, reminding us to eat well and love each other. No pretense. Endless curiosity. Arms flung open to a world that is often confusing but always fascinating. Losing Tony hit all of us hard, and his approach to the world- sharp tongue, soft heart- was the deep inspiration for Moveable Feast long before it was ever created. Meeting strangers around tables is the deep core of what makes us human, and he always reminded us of that.

We'll be honoring Anthony's legacy and memory with our first popup of the year with recipes inspired by his wanderings over this diverse planet. 100% of proceeds from this dinner will be donated directly to the Seattle chapter of NAMI, a mental health organization that provides accessible mental health care and suicide prevention services. (yes, all proceeds! Every penny.)

July 14 at 6 pm
$195 (benefitting mental health programs and suicide prevention at NAMI Seattle)
Chef Johnny (yes, the same guy we met at that stranger's table in Thailand) will be whipping up a collection of courses inspired by his favorite Bourdain recipes. A world tour of flavors and cuisines and booze pairings with each one (because what meal is complete without a little liquor, Anthony would want to know) and a table full of strangers.

We can't wait to have you, and to raise a glass in honor of a man who reminded us of our shared humanity.
