Ways Not to Drown: a Dance-theater Workshop with Deborah Slater (Part of the 2018 FURY Factory Festival)
WAYS NOT TO DROWN is the Dance & Theater workshop open to artists & creatives of all disciplines. Experiments using writing, moving & vocalization to create new material; gain specific, repeatable tasks to take home, and ensemble experiments are offered to apply to your own creative process. How do you locate source material, transform it into your art form & translate it for an audience?  What informs your performance?  All this and more.

Deborah Slater, director, choreographer and performer, has worked in theater and dance for 30 years. Collaborators include the Magic Theater, San Diego Rep & A Traveling Jewish Theater. She is the Artistic Director of Deborah Slater Dance Theater, a multi-media dance company, doing visually gorgeous, acrobatic, talking dance, dedicated to the creation of full-length works exploring social issues, science and art through original dance, text and music.  In 2015 Slater was awarded the Della Davidson Prize for Innovations in Dance & Theater and selected for Co-Lab/SF Dance Film Festival to create a new short film with cinematographer Herve Cohen. "In the Space Between" premiered at the SFDF festival in 2016. Recent awards include two IZZIES for Special Achievement and Visual Design for PRIVATE LIFE in 2016 and an IZZIE nomination for Darren Johnstons score for TIMES ARROW in 2017. Selected commissions & residencies  include SF MOMA, USF Dance & Social Justice, Iowa State University & the Exploratorium.
