"Blackbird" Presented by Right On Productions
For what Blackbird does is convince us, through a creeping current of persuasion, that the shared history of Ray and Una which put him in (prison) and her on a path of self-destruction is indeed a love story. And that this is the grimmest tragedy of all, one that they can neither willingly embrace nor even find the words for. ...Its as if the enormity of what binds them can be approached only obliquely. -BEN BRANTLEY NY Times
Right On Productions is mounting David Harrower's taught emotional drama "Blackbird" at The Robert Mello Studio Blackbox in Atlanta, Georgia. Fifteen years ago, 35-year-old Ray was convicted of sexually abusing 12-year-old Una. After serving his prison sentence, Ray changed his name and started a new life. Una, still haunted by her past, stumbles across a recent photo of Ray and decides to confront him at his workplace. Directed by Marc Gowan. Starring Heather Rule and Jayson Warner Smith.
Cesar Cruz says it best, "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable". Blackbird is a raw, powerful, unapologetic piece of theatre that we feel strongly obligated to produce and share with the Atlanta community. This gripping story of love, loss, and the struggle to move on has left a mark on our team since the first read, and we believe it has the power to do the same to others. As artists, we must be proactive about creating the opportunities we want. We owe it to ourselves and the world around us to share this story.
