Substance Misuse Symposium, sponsored by Providence Health and Services
The purpose of the Chemical Dependency Training Consortium of the Northwest is to provide low-cost training for the staff, interns and volunteers of member agencies and other professional caregivers. All training provided must meet all standards of and be recognized for continuing-education credit by the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and the Addiction Counselor Certification Board of Oregon (ACCBO).
Dr. Shamim Nejad, a neuropsychiatrist with Massachusetts General Hospital, and Inga Giske, a Nurse Manager with Providence St. Vincent Inpatient Psychiatry will present on the impact, presentation, and treatment of substance abuse disorder at this Providence Health and Services Substance Misuse Symposium. Misuse of substances including Opiates and Medical Marijuana will be discussed. Participants will learn about the neurobiology of addiction and treatment considerations including integrative approaches. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of how inpatient treatment is utilized and how to improve community care coordination.

Presenters:
Shamim H. Nejad, MD, is a neuropsychiatrist who specializes in the care of patients whose problems involve co-morbid psychiatric, medical, and surgical issues, and require intensive care unit stays. After completing his residency training in Seattle at the University of Washington, and a fellowship in psychosomatic medicine/consultation psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Nejad joined the faculty at MGH and HMS, where he supervise trainees and conduct research (on delirium, alcohol withdrawal, and care of the critically ill) to enhance the quality of patient care and our knowledge in these areas.
Dr. Nejad's clinical interests and expertise revolve around the provision of psychiatric care for patients following trauma and severe burns. Since he started consulting to the burns and trauma services he has evaluated and treated over 300 patients each year and the service has been a core training experience for approximately 20 medical students, residents, and fellows yearly; referrals are received from colleagues locally, regionally, and nationally. Our treatment of alcohol withdrawal (with phenobarbital) in patients with co-morbid medical and surgical illness has improved care and averted delirium tremens.
Inga Giske, MSN, RN-BC, NE-BC currently manages the Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR. She holds a Master's Degree in Psychiatric Nursing with a subspecialty in Addiction and has been a psychiatric nurse for fourteen years. Inga began her career caring for individuals with addiction and mental illness and is passionate about ensuring those with addiction receive excellent care. In addition to her role as a Nurse Manager, Inga is a member of the Washington County Crisis Intervention Training team and has presented both locally and nationally at nursing and CIT conferences.

This course has been approved by CDTC as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, for educational credits. NAADAC Provider #100385. CDTC is responsible for all aspects of their programming.

The CDTC Refund/Cancellation Policy:
For full refund, cancellation of attendance must be received by the CDTC at least 3 days prior to the event.
Cancellations made in less than 3 days of the event are subject to a $15 handling charge.
Occasionally, changes are made due to speaker availability or unforeseen circumstances. The CDTC will send out an email announcement to the registration contact and provide an update on our website.
If we are aware of bad weather in the area, the CDTC will extend the full refund deadline to include the morning of the training. The CDTC still must receive notice of cancellation of attendance prior to 10 a.m.
