La Farce de Maître Pathelin (une lecture mise en espace)
Le Théâtre Des Sans Soucis is proud to present a theatricalized reading of "La Farce de Maître Pathelin," a medieval French farce which appeared in written form for the first time in 1486 by an anonymous author.

The play is considered to be the best and one of the oldest masterpieces of medieval comic theatre; it is, furthermore, often considered as the first comic play in the history of French literature.

Written originally in Old French, the play centers on the character of Pathelin, a do-it-yourself, self-taught "lawyer" who has gained a reputation for tricking people.  Having fallen on rough times, he sets out to procure some fabric with which to make some new clothes for him and his wife, Guillemette. The problem is that he doesn't have a penny to buy the fabric, so he devises a plan to trick a local shopkeeper, Guillaume Joceaulme, to "sell" it to him on credit, with the false promise of getting his money back to him that very same day, along with the promise of a nice goose dinner and beer.  But when Guillaume comes to collect his payment, Pathelin and his wife put on a show for him that leaves him frustrated and confused.

The second act opens with the shopkeeper threatening to take the not-so-innocent shepherd, Thibault L'Agnelet, who tends to his sheep, to court because he has lost 30 sheep in the last 3 years.  The shepherd, who is actually guilty of eating the sheep, seeks Pathelin's help to defend him in court. True to his nature, Pathelin comes up with a sneaky scheme to dupe the shopkeeper and win the favor of the judge. But Pathelin may have just met his match with the shepherd when it comes to the art of trickery.

This theatricalized reading (with costumes, sound, lights, and projections) is in modern French and includes a cast of 5, all of whom are either native or near-native speakers of French.  Myriam Baillargeon is in the title role, Pathelin. Arwen Dewey plays his wife, Guillemette. Erik Sackstein is the shopkeeper, Guillaume Joceaulme. Véronique Lecoq plays the shepherd, and Emilie Ross is the Judge.

The play is directed by professor of French at Western Washington University, Dr. Scott Taylor. It is stage-managed by Jordan Talbot.
