THE MERCHANT OF VENICE BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Adapted & directed by JOHN ALEX HOULTON
Shakespeare classified his play The Merchant of Venice as a comedy. His decision has intrigued and sometimes confused audiences over the past 400-plus years, since the play deals with serious subjects the treatment of Jews and the treatment of women in society, subjects as important today as they were in the 1590s when Shakespeare wove them into his tale of high finance and high romance. He set it in Venice, Italy, at that time the city where merchants held the power and the wealth for all Europe, while womens rights were limited by tradition and law.
Its been said that the play is anti-semitic and anti-womens rights, but Shakespeare is much too wise and clever a dramatist for such simplicity. Shylock, his leading Jewish character is given three powerful speeches defending himself, while Portia, his heroine, takes a chance to show her talents in the world of men and wins her case.
Youll find it fascinating and fun to see how Shakespeare uses these challenging subjects and still brings us to a suitably happy ending to his comedy.
