Interpreter Bookclub: (Open to Spanish / English interpreters)
The "Interpreter Book Club" gives you credit for reading! This book club is offered to interpreters working in English and any other language. Each session has a limited enrollment, so register soon if a particular book seems interesting to you! If you would like a language-specific book club, perhaps to maintain proficiency in your second language, please refer back to the general list of events offered by Margie Franzen WordWork LLC. All events are searchable on the Brown Paper Ticket site using the search term "wordwork".

Medical interpretation is the work of putting someone else's biography into words. There are times when technical vocabulary becomes part of a person's life narrative and there are times when the language of one's life is emotional or subjectively descriptive. Interpreters are expected to be prepared for the entire spectrum of how a person's biographical narrative changes as they negotiate their interactions with the medical and healthcare system.

Each session of the "Interpreter Book Club" addresses an interpreter's need to maintain passive and active vocabularies in his/her working languages. Interpreter work can sometimes be repetitive, but reading gives you new contexts to consider and will keep you on your toes! Each session is assigned a book to read before coming together in-person for a facilitated discussion of vocabulary or expressions that could present particular interpretation challenges.

All interpreters, working in any language combination, are welcome. During the discussion, there will be an opportunity to practice your skill interpreting from English to the other language your work in.

Registration for the "Interpreter Book Club" is free! Complimentary refreshments (tea, coffee, juice, sparking water) served.

Señales que precederán al fin del mundo by Yuri Herrera describes the border between Mexico and the United States. It is a short novel, but one that takes on a huge topic: "crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when theres no going back."

It is probably safe to say that the topics of immigration, messages, multiple languages, and crossings touch every single day goes by in the life of a Spanish / English interpreter. All are invited to read this book, either the Spanish source text or the English translation.

What do you need to do to get credit for the Interpreter Book Club? Just read this book, feel its impact. Maybe mark some expressions that you find particularly descriptive. Maybe mark some you think might be tricky to interpret. Then come to share (even if you didn't manage to finish the book)! We'll hone our skills, from expanding our vocabulary for the situations presented in the book to refreshing our knowledge of grammar constructions needed to accurately translate content and tone. It'll be your most productively social (or socially productive?) hour of your week!

You will receive an email upon registration with more details about where to obtain a copy of the book and about the location where all book club sessions will be held!

Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of each session, which can be used to apply for one (1) CHI or ATA ceu.

PLEASE NOTE: To register for the "Interpreters' Book Club", you must first complete the overview of "Literature for the Medical Language Professional". This is a one (1) hour course, eligible for one (1) CHI or ATA ceu and offered on various dates throughout the year.
