Allison Miller and Jenny Sheinmans Parlour Game
The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU are pleased to continue their support of female bandleaders in the jazz field by welcoming the return to Charlottesville of drummer Allison Miller and violinist Jenny Scheinman with their new band Parlour Game. They will perform in concert at The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church on Rugby Road at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, May 1st.

Allison and Jenny last appeared here to resounding acclaim with Allisons sextet Boom Tic Boom in 2016, on the heels of their album Otis Was A Polar Bear. This time Allison and Jenny are co-leading a new quartet, Parlour Game, which also features the fiery young pianist Carmen Staaf, and veteran bassist Tony Scherr.

Parlour Game was born on tour when Carmen Staaf and Tony Scherr were subbing for the piano and bass player in Boom Tic Boom. There was an immediate chemistry. "Even the edgiest material swung, says Miller, and we realized that we had found something really special. It felt so good!

Scheinman and Miller met in Brooklyn in the early 2000's. Their insatiable curiosity brought them into a variety of different genres. Scheinman formed a lifelong connection with Bill Frisell and wrote and released nine albums featuring some of the most innovative jazz musicians of our time such as Jason Moran, Ron Miles and Nels Cline. She also dove headfirst into the roots world, touring and recording with such Americana artists as Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell, and Bruce Cockburn. Miller has also been a bandleader for many years and has performed with Natalie Merchants band, Ani DiFranco, and many jazz groups. She is frequently the special guest drummer on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Staaf and Scherr are also versed in numerous American genres and share a deep respect for roots music. Staaf has worked closely with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and Scherr has played extensively with Bill Frisell, Sex Mob and Maria Schneider.

I have often played music that is in some way a reaction to jazz, says Scheinman. In this group I just want to play a great melody, feel the groove, and let the audience in. So much can happen at a show when everyone is in it together.

Tickets to see Allison Miller and Jenny Scheinmans Parlour Game are available online at parlourgame.brownpapertickets.com. The cost is $20 general admission, $15 for paid supporters of The Charlottesville Jazz Society, and $10 for students. All tickets will be $25 at the door. Tickets will also be available in person at The Tin Whistle Irish Pub, Tuesday through Sunday between 11 am and 3 pm, cash or check only. And be sure to listen for the music of Allison Miller and Jenny Scheinman on WTJU, 91.1 FM. For more information visit Cvilllejazz.org, or call Gary at (434) 249-6191.
