Thalea String Quartet - Liberated
A fresh and passionate quartet, Thalea Quartets repertoire is even more diverse than their members and every bit as exuberant. Praises for this top Bay Area quartet include "a stirring performance", "uncanny comprehension", and "freshness of ideas." SF Classical Voice praised their "vibrant performance" and "sincere expressivity."
Mentored by members of the Juilliard, Kronos, Takács, Pacifica and Danish String Quartets, they made their debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in early 2016. TSQ was appointed as the first quartet-in-residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2015-17. They have been selected as one of two finalists for the 2018 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition in Yellow Springs, OH. April 29, 2018.
One reviewer remarked of their interpretation of one classic piece, "Their Beethoven was replete with phrased nuance and spikey rhythmic energy yet with carefully adjusted tone... the quartet is still growing and has the potential to be one of the finest of its generation."
"As a music lover, I reveled in the emotional spectrum you have at your constant disposal. As a performer, I marveled at the power you held over a deservedly rapt audience in moments of drama as well as expanses of dire austerity. I feel privileged to have heard you." Robert Bardston, cellist.
A multi-talented ensemble, besides performing as classical musicians, individual members also perform jazz, compose for interactive visual art, sing with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, dance ballet, and occasionally act on a hit TV show.
Hear them in an intimate historic venue of only 100 seats in the glow of candles and firelight of the Swedenborgian Church, an early Arts&Crafts gem, perfectly preserved craftsmanship from a bygone era.
