Doors and Tea Tasting, 6:30pm
Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
578 Carrall St. Vancouver

On Saturday, June 30, 2018, Jasmine Jazz, an unusual interplay between traditional Chinese and jazz instruments will take place at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, featuring the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble and some of Vancouver's finest jazz artists led by Juno-nominated bassist and composer, Jodi Proznick. As a special treat, TEALEAVES will offer tastings of the highest quality jasmine teas, scented using the Imperial Scenting Method, before and during the concert. The natural aroma of jasmine blossoms, with the musical blend of jazz and Chinese instruments will create a sweet summer night!

Jasmine Jazz brings Chinese instrumentalists Jirong Huang (erhu), Sarah Yusha Tan (guzheng) and  Zhongxi Wu (suona) together with Jodi Proznick (bass), Bill Coon (guitar) and James Danderfer (clarinet/sax) for a unique musical experience. Jazz will be interpreted through traditional Chinese instruments; traditional and contemporary Chinese music will be given a new life through jazz. According to Jodi Proznick The evening will be all about musical conversations, an east meets west experience, full of beauty, harmony, mutual respect and interplay. The repertoire will be a beautiful mix of songs pulled from jazz repertoire, traditional Chinese folk music and original composition featuring themes around the setting for the concert itself - the garden. Repertoire will include Chinese classics Jasmine Flower and Shanghai Night, the contemporary Taiwanese song Moon Represents My Heart and a selection of jazz standards that support the garden theme, such as Black Narcissus, Iris and Willow Weep for Me.

Formed in 1989, the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble is the first professional Chinese music organization established in Canada. The Ensemble consists of highly accomplished instrumentalists who combine technical mastery with a passionate approach to music. Based in Vancouver, BC, they continue to inspire contemporary compositions and interdisciplinary projects for Chinese instruments in Canada.

Opened in Vancouvers Chinatown in 1986, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is the first full-scale classical Chinese garden built outside of China. It is a non-profit living museum, passionate about connecting cultures and communities through festivals, live music, art exhibits, and educational programs.

The presenters gratefully acknowledge the support of Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Vancouver through Cultural Services, the Province of BC through Community Gaming Grant and Tealeaves (https://www.tealeaves.com/)
