[Re]Visiting the House: Gunning/Glenbrow House Tour
Once a primary topic of architectural discourse, from Vitruvius to Laugier, the house as a container of necessitysafety and comforthas largely been reduced to inconsequential discussion. Beyond coffee table books filled with full-bleed photographs, what happened to the architectural discourse regarding the house? Why is the single-family dwelling largely under-scrutinized and un-criticized? It is the aim of [Re]Thinking the House to ignite the field of inquiry regarding the single-family dwelling and its role within architectural circles. The Glenbrow Gunning House, once listed on the Ohio most endangered building list, was designed in 1939 based on Frank Lloyd Wright principles, by a trio at the start of illustrious careers: Tony Smith, 28, a Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice who in the 1950s and 60s became a world-renowned sculptor; Laurence Cuneo, 19, who became the art director on the I Love Lucy television show; and Theodore van Fossen, also 19, who went on to design 48 Wrightian homes in Worthingtons Rush Creek Village. In addition to the home, the property includes a four-bay carport and a three-story tower house. The owner and architect, Joe Kuspan, will lead the tour.
