Firle Pilgrimage
An invitation to walk, to be, and to celebrate.
Join us for a day of pilgrimage on the South Downs Way followed by an evening of music, dancing, contemplation and rest in St Peters Church, Firle.
We invite you to explore the ancient spirit of pilgrimage, the primal human urge to walk with reverence on the land and to seek sanctuary in sacred places.
You are invited to join us for the whole day and night, or there are a limited number of tickets for the evening only.
During the day we will follow a circular route from St Peters Church, Firle along the South Downs Way. The walk will be held lovingly and lightly, with practices to drop us into our bodies and to enliven our senses to the world around, to bring us together as a pilgrim group as well as to create times of silence and solitude within community.
The South Downs is a gently rolling terrain and our route will take in a few steep hills, rewarded by stunning views. However our pace will be gentle with pauses for rest and nourishment - the destination is in every moment, not far away!
In the evening we will take sanctuary within the stone walls of the church. Together we will experience the sacred space of the church outside of the boundaries of traditional worship. This will be a space to make music, to sing, to dance, to contemplate or simply to be together in the candlelit church.
Finally as the night draws in we will lay down beds and sleep as pilgrims traditionally did in the shelter of the church.

More about our vision of pilgrimage
This is a pilgrimage of contemplation and celebration, silence and song, stillness and movement.
It is invitation into aliveness; the simplicity of walking offers a way back into the vital centre of our being.
It is an invitation into communion; returning to ourselves we return to each other, to other than human life and to the body of land upon which we walk and dance.
It is an invitation into wholeness; the rhythm of our footsteps echoes the heartbeat of the earth, offering an embodied reminder that it is right here - in this body, in this earth, in this moment, in this life - that we belong.
We offer an antidote to the striving and competition of modern society and invite you to weave together the threads of your being - inner and outer, dark and light, known and unknown.
