Picturing Plants: Cyanotype and botanical drawing as tools for depicting nature
Occidental Center for the Arts, Botanical Dimensions
Occidental, CA
Share this event:

A intensive weekend workshop (June 2-3) focused on truly seeing plants and representing them creatively. We will discuss the history of botanical art and different ways of representing plants throughout the centuries. We will practice close observation that can lead us to realistic representation as well as abstraction and patterning with botanical forms. Participants will learn two specialized, hands-on techniques: 1) Kat will show us botanical illustration with graphite pencils, pen-and-ink, and colored pencils. 2) Klea will teach the early photographic technique of cyanotype printing, which uses plant forms and light-sensitive emulsion on paper. Participants will leave with finished artwork in both mediums as well as the skills to continue this work, or even to combine these unique mediums. Previous art experience is appreciated, but not necessary.

Klea McKenna is a visual artist whose work has been shown and published internationally at venues such as SFMOMA, Datz Museum of Art in Korea, and The Museum of Photographic Arts. Her unique photograms are held in the collection of the SFMOMA, LACMA, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the US Embassy collection and the Mead Museum of Art. Klea is represented by Von Lintel Gallery in Los Angeles and Euqinom Projects in San Francisco. See her work at www.kleamckenna.com

Kathleen Harrison is an ethnobotanist and educator, who also draws plants and teaches botanical illustration. Kat directs the Ethnobotany Library in Occidental, CA, as the hub of the non-profit organization, Botanical Dimensions, which she co-founded in 1985. She teaches classes there, and internationally, on a wide range of topics that pattern traditional and contemporary plant-human relations.  www.botanicaldimensions.org

Cost includes all materials. Participants may register for full weekend workshop, or for Day 1 or Day 2. All tickets include Saturday evening lecture. Discounts available for current members of the Ethnobotany Library (get a membership to receive your discount!)

Note: Workshops are held on consecutive days (June 2-3) from 10am-4pm each day with a short break for lunch). There is a lecture Saturday evening from 7:30-9:30 that includes preparation for the Cyanotype component of the workshop.

Note: Participants registering for only Day 1 or Day 2 may also attend the Saturday evening lecture (this is especially preferred for Day 2 participants).

*Cancellation policy: Full refunds can only be granted if attendee notifies Botanical Dimensions of withdrawal 10 days in advance of the day of the class. If attendee gives less than 10 days notice, we regret that no refund is possible. If Botanical Dimensions needs to cancel a class for any reason, we will notify you as soon as possible (at least 1 day prior to the event) and you will receive a full refund, less the servicing fee charged to you by Brown Paper Tickets.
