LEARNING GOALS:
Learn to observe the figure as a whole shape.
Draw the silhouette descriptively and more accurately.
Start puzzling out the interior shapes and details that give the figure volume and character.

WORKSHOP PLAN:
5 min: Introductions
30 min: Instructor demo: Focus on the silhouette with tonal sketches
45 min: Student practice
15 min: Review of student sketches
30 min: Instructor demo: Adding details and texture with line
60-70 min: Student practice. We will have a quick review halfway through this longer drawing session to give people more feedback and ideas for finishing their drawings.
10 min: Final throwdown. Student work is shared and insights and successes shared.

SUPPLY LIST:
This class is not media-specific, so choose simple drawing tools that you are comfortable using. We will be doing exercises that require both a finer and a broader mark making tool. The focus is not on color, but colored pens or pencils would work fine. Here are some suggestions:

1. Something to Draw Lines With (bring at least one):
Pen  ballpoint, gel, felt tip and fountain pens are all good.
Graphite pencil  medium soft such as HB, B or 2B
Color pencils  medium to dark colors

2. Something to Make Bigger Marks With (bring at least one*):
Markers  brush or chisel tip* (I like the Faber Castell Big Brush Pens, but any brand will do.)
Brush pens or waterbrushes filled with ink*
Carpenter's pencil (which a broad, chisel tip), B or 2B

*If you use markers or brush pens  you will NEED a lighter color, but you may want to bring a darker color also (ie. Light and dark blue or light gray and black). You will be drawing OVER the lighter color with your other pen/pencil.

3.) Sketching paper (plan on using 4-10 sheets, depending on how large you draw and how big your pages are. Keep your pad/paper size reasonably portable. Anything from 4x6 to about 16x20 inches should work.
