Simplify the figure with 6 brush strokes.
Create 5 text styles with your own handwriting.
Maximize your colors with water-soluble media.
Combine text, headlines and sketches for journal pages that capture the day.

WORKSHOP PLAN:

5 min: Introductions
35 min: Warm up: Shortcuts, step by step
A series of guided exercises with quick review after each
Basic and expressive lettering with pencil and stencil
Easy 6-stroke figures - Waterbrush
Take a line for a walk - Draw contours with pencil/pen (dry/wet)
10 min: Instructor demo: Simple color mixing, watercolor, pencils/crayon
60 min: Demo/exercise
- Street furniture
- Cars - inside the box
- Alleys, buildings
- One basic layout that always works
Sketchbook examples, shortcuts, handouts
15 min: Review, Q & A
45 min: Practice session: Go for it!
Fill the page/s with what you see, feel and hear.
Your sketchbook will be full of practice examples.
Start a fresh page or two-page spread.
Practice combining the drawing, the color, the text.
One-on-one help when requested.
15 min: Finishing touches: headlines, ephemera
Use instructor's scissors, glue sticks to attach ephemera you've collected. Add headlines, dates.
20 mins - Final throw down and review
Student work is displayed and insights and successes shared.

Instructor info: Michele Cooper is a fine artist living in the Seattle area. She has been teaching watercolor since 1980. She teaches at Skagit Valley College and Kirkland Arts Center and has led traveling watercolor workshops in US, Canada, Italy and France. Michele has given recent programs on watercolor line and wash for regional libraries and plein air watercolor and nature journaling workshops for US National Parks at North Cascades Institute. She is published as a featured artist in two books by North Light Books and in several news articles and periodicals. Michele is President Emeritus of National Collage Society, signature member of Northwest Watercolor Society, Women Painters of Washington, and blog correspondent for Urban Sketchers Seattle and Anacortes Sketchers.
