LEARNING GOALS: A. Locating: Deciding on a viewpoint that establishes three layers of space -- foreground, middle ground, and background; creates overlapping shapes to aid in conveying depth; and avoids unfortunate alignments. B. Framing: Determining the extent of the view -- the horizontal and the vertical limits of the scene to be drawn -- as well as positioning the point of focus or interest off-center so as to create a more dynamic composition on the page. C. Composing: Ensuring that the desired view will fit on the page of our sketchbook or journal by placing and sizing the first line or element appropriately.
WORKSHOP PLAN: A demonstration followed by a series of exercises and individual and group critiques focusing on the three goals.
SUPPLY LIST: A smooth, free-flowing pen or very soft pencil and a sketch pad of your choice. Instructor info: Widely known for his books on architectural drawing, Frank Ching is a retired professor of architecture after three decades of teaching. He is still active writing, illustrating, and revising architectural texts. He has been a member of Urban Sketchers Seattle since 2009, offering a number of drawing workshops with Gail Wong in the Seattle area and at several Urban Sketchers Symposiums overseas.
