Johnny Vidacovich Trio
Tonight's show features one of the most original and acclaimed drummers to ever come out of New Orleans. Johnny Vidacovich is known far and wide as an innovator. In his very personal approach to percussion, Vidacovich combines elements of New Orleans' traditional rhythms with free techniques and mainstream sensibilities. He is at once a brilliant soloist and a highly sensitive accompanist with the ability to detect and quickly enhance even the most subtle change of direction. His command of dynamics, distinctive melodic accents and effervescent swing have brought him international recognition as the quintessential modern New Orleans drummer. His unique style and conviction has led to performances with jazz masters Joe Henderson, Donald Byrd, Kenny Baron, Eddie Harris, Nat Adderley, Joe Williams, Ray Anderson and Bennie Wallace, plus work with such Southern legends as Professor Longhair, James Booker and Mose Allison. Most recently, Johnny has toured with guitarist Charlie Hunter. Johnny's albums as a leader include "Banks Street" and "Mystery Street" (both Chebasco), and his new solo album, Vidacovich.
John Medeski
Keyboardist John Medeski was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and grew up in Florida. After studying piano as a child (starting when he was five years old), he began as a teenager to perform with musicians such as Mark Murphy and Jaco Pastorius. In 1983, after graduating from high school, he began studying piano at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he performed as a sideman with Dewey Redman, Billy Higgins, Bob Mintzer, Alan Dawson, and others. Medeski attributes his early interest in playing improvised music and jazz to listening to jazz piano giant Oscar Peterson.
Medeski is best known for his work with Medeski Martin & Wood including drummer and percussionist Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood. The trio formed in New York in 1991 playing gigs at The Village Gate. Since the mid-1990s they have toured steadily in both national and international funk, jazz, and jam music scenes. The band has collaborated with such musicians as Iggy Pop, Trey Anastasio and John Scofield.
Medeski performs in a range of musical styles, from accessible groove-based funk and jazz (such as the MM&W albums and A Go Go with John Scofield) to more experimental music (including many of John Zorn's projects: Duras: Duchamp, Interzone, Liber Novus, Nova Express, Dreamachines, Templars: In Sacred Blood, At the Gates of Paradise, and collaborations with David Fiuczynski).
Medeski produced and was featured on the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's 1999 release Buckjump. Also in 1999, he played the organ on two tracks of the Morphine album The Night.
In 2000, Medeski became a member of The Word, a bluesy gospel style project with members Robert Randolph (pedal steel) from Robert Randolph and the Family Band, brothers Luther Dickinson (guitar) and Cody Dickinson (drums), and Chris Chew (bass) of North Mississippi Allstars. The band released a self-titled album in 2001 and toured in 2001 and 2002. The band reunited in 2005 for a performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, and they embarked on tour again in late 2007.
He has also occasionally performed with Phil Lesh and Friends.
On July 14, 2006, John Medeski & The Itch performed their debut gig at the All Good Music Festival in Masontown, West Virginia. The Itch consists of Eric Krasno (guitar) of Soulive and Adam Deitch (drums) with Medeski playing a B3 Organ. Also in 2006, Medeski performed with The Million Dollar Bashers for the recording of the soundtrack to the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There.
In 2008, Medeski was featured on guitarist Will Bernard's Blue Plate Special album.
In 2012, Medeski was featured on progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria's albums The Afterman: Ascension and The Afterman: Descension performing piano, clavinet and synthesizer parts.
Will Bernard
Although currently a New Yorker, guitarist Will Bernard's unique voice was formed for the most part from the rich cultural roots of the San Francisco Bay Area. Along the way he studied classical music, jazz, played in basements and coliseums, and absorbed the Bay Area Multi-Kultii, the New York downtown edge, and the loose funk of New Orleans. He has performed or recorded with Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, John Medeski, Dr Lonnie Smith, Ben Sidran, Peter Apfelbaum, Tom Waits, Dr. John and a lot of other known and unknowns. Will can be seen working in a chameleon-like way to fit into his current habitat. His 2007 CD "Party Hats" as well as his 1997 collaborative project T.J. Kirk's If Four Was One were both nominated for Grammys, and he is nominated yearly in Downbeat Magazine's Critics Poll for "Best Rising Star" Guitar Player. Will is a regular fixture at New Orleans Jazzfest, Jam Cruise and other similar events, and has toured extensively in the US and Europe. Currently, Will performs with John Medeski's Mad Skillet, Peter Apfelbaum's Sparkler, Frequinox with Stanton Moore and Robert Walter, Pleasure Drones, Brian Charette's Mighty Grinders, and the Will Bernard Trio and Quartet. Will's 8th album as a leader, Out and About was released in 2016 on Posi-Tone Records.
Tonight, Johnny has assembled the incredible talents of world-renowned musicians John Medeski (Medeski, Martin & Wood) and guitarist Will Bernard in a Trio that promises to take its audience on a musical journey unlike any other.
Pete Muller & Friends
Pete Muller's newest album, Two Truths and a Lie, is driven by the same themes that shape his life: connection and growth.
Some people know Muller as a pioneer in quant investing. Not as many know that, while he was emerging as a giant in the financial world, he was also busking in New York City subways, sharing his original and wholehearted songs with harried New York City commuters.
This journey has given Muller an unusual perspective.
"There are times in your life when you're in flow," Muller says, "when there is nothing but joy and love in your heart, and everything feels like it is meant to be. You're completely relaxed, but energized and aware at the same time. To me, success in life is about being in that state as often as possible."
That state informs everything about Two Truths and a Lie. And it's one of the reasons Muller's songs tend to capture audiences on first listen. On the new album, he's joined by his long-time trio members Skip Ward on bass and Kyle Rowland on drums. Cameos include well-known artists such as trombonist Walter Hawkes. The album was produced by Rick DePofi, whose credits include Rosanne Cash's Grammy-winning The River & The Thread.
Muller's lyrics tend toward the honest and the straightforward, echoing the best of songwriters like Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, and Elvis Costello - to name a few who've inspired Muller to connect and grow. Muller was trained early in jazz improvisation and honed his skills hosting a songwriting circle in New York City.
When people get to know Muller better, they discover other intriguing aspects to his story, such as his interest in crossword puzzles. "The first crossword puzzle I submitted to the NY Times was rejected," Muller says, reflecting on the ways growth has shaped his life, "but with an encouraging note that made me want to do better. I kept going." Muller has since published several crosswords in the Times, and he even runs a music-themed crossword contest.
Most recently, as a Berklee College of Music Trustee, Muller partnered with the music school and the City of New York to renovate and revitalize the storied Power Station Recording Studios in New York. With an emphasis on "reinventing" music education, the new facility will concentrate on continuing education for school-age children, teacher training, and providing internships to current Berklee students. Muller's vision is to give back to the musical community, and create an environment where evolving musicians are allowed to reach their creative potential.
Do better. Keep going. Muller's message is as simple as it is inspiring.
