When the Unexpected Happens: Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Childbirth
REGISTRATION IS CLOSED AS THIS EVENT IS AT CAPACITY.

Recent research indicates that nearly one third of birthing women experience their births as traumatic. New data suggests that PTSD consequent to traumatic childbirth is not limited to birthing women, but is also experienced by partners and birth providers.  This presentation will offer attendees a way in which to recognize and understand traumatic childbirth from both provider and patient points of view. We will address the things that contribute to the sense of birth as traumatic and discuss ways in which to prevent, recognize (in the moment) and rapidly intervene in potentially traumatic situations. We will also provide an opportunity for participants to practice healing interventions for both themselves and their client, and to learn about post-traumatic growth. This training is designed for nurses, midwives, doulas, therapists, lactation consultants, and others who provide care and compassion to childbearing families.

Objectives of this training:
(1)Identify five events/conditions that put a woman at risk for experiencing traumatic birth and the consequent development of PTSD;
(2)Identify at least four symptoms of PTSD
(3)Describe two treatment approaches for PTSD following traumatic childbirth
(4)Identify three phenomenon that differentiate the needs of partners and/or health care providers from the needs of the birthing woman following a traumatic birth
(5)Identify three components necessary for post-traumatic growth and transformation
