Fire Recovery Walk: Sonoma Valley Regional Park
Join Sonoma Ecology Center staff to learn to see the land rebound at Sonoma Valley Regional Park, which burned in the October wildfires. We will be watching for special "fire follower" wildflowers, assessing burned trees and learning how to interpret fire-affected landscapes. Discussion questions include: Why did this happen? What does it mean? How do we prepare for it happening again?
This is a moderate hike of about 3-1/2 miles with an elevation gain of about 500 feet.
We will meet at the parking lot of the main entrance to Sonoma Valley Regional Park, at 13630 Sonoma Hwy (Route 12).There is a $7 per vehicle park entrance fee. For an annual parking pass, become a Sonoma County Regional Parks member: http://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/Become-a-Member/
Bring water, dress in layers, and wear good hiking shoes. Bring poles if you normally use them. You may wish to bring binoculars. The walk will be on both paved paths and single track trails, so be prepared for mud.
This series is supported by the Sonoma Valley Ecological Fire Relief Fund. Donations to this fund dedicated to fire education, active response, and prevention are gratefully accepted!
