MARCH 24 - TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR from 6:30 p.m.

In the poetry and music of myth, the literature of legend, the clamour of contemporary news, there is a void - a silence belonging uniquely to women. Her action drives the story, shapes beginnings and endings, yet when her function is served, she disappears, leaving the narrative - spoken, sung, remembered - to celebrate the male hero alone. Her voice is discouraged, intimidated, silenced. Unheard.

Astrolabe Musik Theatre proudly presents unheard, a multimedia evening of a cappella and electro-acoustic works for solo voice by Canadian composers exploring silenced stories of women in literature, history and mythology on March 23 and 24 at the Canadian Music Centre and Chali-Rosso Gallery.

A collaborative creation between photographer Maggie MacPherson, costumer Diane Park, and soprano Heather Pawsey under the expert direction of stage director James Fagan Tait, unheard integrates visual art, performative costuming and unaccompanied song into a visually and acoustically immersive experience. As one woman embodying many, Pawsey performs a tour-de-force bringing unheard women from Greek mythology (Persephone and Daphne), history (Yasodhara, Buddhas wife) and literature (Shamhat, The Epic of Gilgamesh) to life in Jeffrey Ryans thought-provoking a cappella unheard song-theatre with poetry by Vancouver Poet Laureate Rachel Rose.

Partially staged and framed within MacPhersons art photographs, with Parks performative costuming (costuming performed in full view of the audience, unheard also features Jennifer Butlers Eve and As Ordinary as Stars; R. Murray Schafers Aria of the Princess from The Princess of the Stars, and Anna Pidgornas electro-acoustic Off the Voice about a woman who, literally, has no voice. Sounds from silence, unheard heard.

March 24:  Chali-Rosso Gallery (549 Howe Street), 8:00 p.m.  PARKING:  There is an EasyPark conveniently located directly across the street from the Gallery.  Generously sponsored by Chali-Rosso Gallery.

We look forward to you joining us for these powerful stories of unheard women.
