Active Listening: Listening Between the Lines
Please join us with Kay Batt, IBCLC ret., LLL Leader and Deirdre Knowles, MA, LMHC help us learn more about active listening which is a vital skill for postpartum doulas. Here is a description of the upcoming class:
Your approach to helping a mother breastfeed her baby greatly affects the effectiveness of the information you offer. Establishing a relationship of trust and rapport builds confidence and openness in the relationship and thereby strengthens your effectiveness in encouraging, supporting, problem solving, and decision making with the mother. Understanding the components of effective communication will help you both determine the problem/s and help generate appropriate and effective solutions that work for the mother, father, and baby based on their own personal values and goals.
Topics covered in this workshop include: the importance of affirmation, identifying the feelings of the mothers, framing an empathetic responses, asking and answering effective questions, understanding the difference between giving information, offering options, and giving advice, and other active listening skills. Learning to use these tools and more will help you be more effective and helpful to empower and support the mom, baby, and family. "
