John McCowen/Anne Rhodes/uneasy trio
An evening of improvised musics from all points, welcoming contrabass clarinetist John McCowen (Oakland) and vocalist Anne Rhodes (New Haven), in addition to Portland locals -uneasy trio comprised of Justin Smith (viola, bass, electronics), Annie Gilbert (voice, trombone) and Stephanie Lavon Trotter (voice, electronics) who improvise and explore their unique timbral grouping.

John McCowen is in town for his recent release Solo Contra and the Portland premiere of an album-length film for Solo Contra created by Portland-based film collectiveOmnium (Dustin Houston and SamKlickner). "For Solo Contra, we worked to pair a long form still life photography approach with completely chaotic, textural digital animation and in-camera effects to match our interpretation of John's work. To us, it was crucial for the project to retain a sense of the microscopic giving way to the macroscopic."

BIOS:

Anne Rhodes performs a wide variety of classical, improvised, and experimental music. She has premiered solo works, chamber music and operatic roles by more than thirty composers. She performs in many experimental improvisation ensembles, including the trio Broadcloth, for which she produces unique embroidered graphic notation. She is a principal singer and an assistant conductor for Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Orchestra. Her duo recording with Braxton GTM (Syntax) 2003 (Leo Records) has been called one of arts great male-female pairings (Lawrence Cosentino, Signal to Noise). annerhodes.net

Annie Gilbert plays trombone and sings. She enjoys exploring non-traditional and collaborative sound and performance practices.

John McCowen is an Oakland-based composer/clarinetist/improviser specializing in post-electronic acoustic music. I travel back-and-forth from Chicago quite a bit to play in the avant-rock group Wei Zhongle. My solo work is focused on the extended possibilities of the clarinet/contrabass clarinet. This embraces electronically-generative music as a structural starting point for acoustic composition - a post-electronic process. I embrace long-form drones as a means to extrude the structure within - treating the clarinet as an acoustic synthesizer. https://www.johnmccowen.com/

Justin Smith is irrationally confident that perseverance and curiosity can lead to good music.

Stephanie Lavon Trotter uses her voice and Sound as a foundation for creating performative installations. Stephanie composes, and improvises with electronics and acoustically; in ensembles and solo. She holds a MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College (2014), a B. Mus in Vocal Performance from Cornish College of the Arts (2008). Recently, she has shared work at Performance Works NW, DISJECTA, and OpenSignal. stephanielavontrotter.com
