HeLa
Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman whose cancer cells were taken from a tumor without her knowledge. Those cells were cultured and became the miraculous source of what is known as the immortal HeLa cell line. HeLa became one the most important cell lines in medical research as Henrietta's cells could reproduce indefinitely under specific conditions. HeLa cells have been instrumental in several great advances of the modern age, and have aided in medical discoveries from polio vaccine to AIDS treatments. HeLa cells continue to be a source of invaluable medical data to this present day.
