In this highly interactive 8-week class for white-identified people*, we use multiple learning modalities, including multimedia, mindfulness, and a variety of movement-based activities to create a supportive learning community. We unpack the old stories of whiteness that inform our society and our personal lives, and begin to imagine a new way of being human together. We believe real change requires more than changing our individual attitudes or reforming our laws and institutions (both of which are necessary). Creating a racially just society will also require changing the implicit beliefs, mental models, and cultural narratives that shape our attitudes as well as our institutions.
Topics covered in this class include: how our personal histories intersect with larger currents of US history, from settler colonialism to gentrification, how to understand white supremacy, as a culture, as a system, and as a collective wound, how we can learn to bear witness to the pain and suffering racism enacts on people of color, and, finally, how racism impacts our own personal and collective well-being.

*We believe that, as white-identified people, we have a responsibility to educate ourselves about racism. In addition, coming together in a white-only space can enable us to be more honest about feelings and experiences that might otherwise be held back out of embarrassment or fear of causing pain to people of color. Honest dialogues about racism among white-identified people also disrupts the white social norm that ordinarily discourages these conversations.

Elana Isaacs is an able-bodied, white, queer, cis femme, Jewish, upper-middle class raised, performing artist, national consultant, trainer, and facilitator with extensive experience custom-designing equity, embodied leadership, and team development programs for businesses, non-profits, and schools. She works with organization leaders and staff to guide social and racial equity goals using Systems and Design Thinking and modalities such as Applied Improvisation to address implicit bias. Recent clients and partners include Toyota, TechInclusion, Urban Habitat, College Preparatory School, Bill Baren Coaching, School for International Training, Institute for Creative Integration, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Alameda County Healthcare Services and San Leandro Juvenile Justice Center. She is a graduate of Oberlin College and Tamalpa Institute for Expressive Arts Therapy and Education. She is also a Senior Consultant with The Justice Collective.
Gregory Mengel PhD is an able-bodied white, gay, cis male, working class raised educator and writer committed to social, racial, and ecological healing. He holds a PhD in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He studies philosophy, history, and cognitive science to unpack the stories that shape our collective realities and apply those insights in the service of a more just and vibrant world. In addition to Beyond Separation, Gregory teaches Untraining White Liberal Racism through the UNtraining and serves on the teaching team for White and Awakening in Sangha at East Bay Meditation Center. Angela Sevin is an able-bodied white, cis female, middle class raised educational consultant, facilitator and visual artist. Passionate about racial equity and stewarding the world we inhabit, she works holistically in collaboration with cutting edge leaders, developing solutions with and for resilient communities. After earning a graduate degree in Experiential Education, she helped start and run several small democratic schools, co-designed the groundbreaking Pathways to Resilience re-entry project and directs the Green Life environmental literacy and self-sufficiency peer education program at San Quentin. She encourages people from all walks of life to come together and share their hopes and desires as well as sorrow and despair about the condition of life here on our planet home. Since the mid 90s, she has worked toward creating educational environments inclusive of social change ideals and activist principles balanced with individual empowerment. By embracing differences compassionately, facilitating others (including herself!) to discover their passion, and with a unique focus on collective wisdom, Angela envisions a future where creativity and learning are nurtured in a way that integrates sustainable and regenerative ways of being.
