This particular practice of traditional medicine has long been kept and coopted from it's indigenous communities. Our intention to create a healing space specific for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color is to prioritize these communities who have been kept from ancestral knowledge away. Berenice was born in Tenochtitlan (what is now known as Mexico City) and grew up in El Monte, CA homeland of the Tongva people. Both of these lands have played a significant role in raising and nurturing her. Berenice's path has led her to plant medicine and ancestral healing practices. Through her work, Berenice creates spaces for people to collectively deepen their relationship to the land, plant life, cosmic energies, ancestors, and to the overall universe.
Berenice is a former High School Teacher and Restorative Justice Coordinator in middle schools. She has been a practitioner for the Healing Clinic Collective and helped support the organizing of both the 2015 Youth and Young Adult Healing Clinic and the 2016 Women of Color Herbal Symposium. Currently, she is creating spaces for people to learn how to make herbal medicine and deepen their connection with the natural world through her community herbal education project Hood Herbalism. Berenice also supports birthing people as a full-spectrum doula. When she is not working, Berenice is outside somewhere, hanging out with plants, gardening, hiking, playing with her two puppies, taking deep breaths under a tree somewhere, reading books, writing, spending time with her altars, and making delicious food.
Training
Berenice became a REIKI Level I practitioner in 2010 and Level II practitioner in 2011. She has been learning from Mexican Curandera, and author of Nustra Medicina: de Los Remedios Para El Aire y Los Remedios Para El Alma, Estela Roman since 2012. Berenice has also received herbal training from Bay Area based Herbalist and founder of Ancestral Apothecary, Atava Garcia Swiecicki. She helped Atava as her TA for a couple of years and then taught "The Curandera Toolkit" at Ancestral Apothecary's School in the spring of 2016. Berenice completed the East Bay Community Birth Support Project Doula Training Program Summer 2014. You can find her listed in in the Doula section of TransBirth.
