Paddles and Pairings Gullah/Geechee Cultural event
Join us on February 23rd for a scenic paddle on the Cape Fear River followed by a craft beer pairing menu focusing on low country cuisine from the Gullah/Geechee culture. Our kayak outfitter is Scott Schmolesky, an experienced guide and owner of Expedition Organization. Kayaks and gear are provided, or you may bring your own. This is your opportunity to paddle, feast, experience and learn! Wilmington is the northernmost federally designated region of the Gullah Geechee corridor. From nps.gov, "The Gullah and Geechee share similar linguistic, artistic and societal traits that have remained relatively intact for several centuries due to the geographic isolation of the region (including 80 barrier islands along the east coast). The cultures represent the many ways that Africans in the Americas maintained their homeland roots while simultaneously assimilating aspects of new cultures they encountered during and after enslavement...Religious ceremonies such as ring shouts, artisan crafts like sweet grass basket weaving, and culinary traditions such as "hoppin' john" and sweet potato pone are all preserved as part of the lifeways of the Gullah/Geechee." The pairing menu will include craft beer, crab/shrimp gumbo, jalapeno corn muffins, hoppin' john and more!
