Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play
Alchemy Theatre Company and the Costa Mesa Playhouse have partnered to present Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play by Anne Washburn, with a musical score by Michael Friedman and lyrics by Anne Washburn. Winner of the 2015 Whiting Award and 2014 Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off- Broadway Play Nominee, Anne Washburns imaginative dark comedy propels us forward nearly a century, following a new civilization stumbling into its future.

What will endure when the cataclysm arriveswhen the grid fails, society crumbles, and were faced with the task of rebuilding? The Simpsons of course! After the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of "The Simpsons" episode "Cape Feare" entirely from memory. 7 years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles, and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past. 75 years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created. A celebration of live theater, and the resilience of Bart Simpson through the ages, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.

Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play is directed by Jeff Lowe. The musical director is Jessica Cosley. The cast features Amanda Byrd, Brian Pirnat, Brooke Lewis, Craig Jackman, Emily Lappi, Jessie Wise, Phil Nieto and Tara Pitt.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm, December 1 through December 16. The performance on Saturday, December 2, will be a Gala celebration and includes a post-show catered reception. Gala tickets are $22 general, $20 students & seniiors. All other performances are $20 and $18. Following the two Sunday martinees, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10, will be talkbacks with the cast and director. For reservations call 949-650-5269 or go on-line at www.costamesaplayhouse.com. Mr. Burns is a special presentation and is not part of Costa Mesa Playhouses subscription season.
