Putting On the Dog, A Stray Dog Salon
Putting On the Dog, an evening of music and poetry to celebrate Mary Sue Rankin
Toronto and the arts community in Canada lost a powerful advocate and remarkable woman when Mary Sue Rankin passed away last year. Her Edward Day Gallery was a welcoming hub and haven for comtemporary artists and creative people from all disciplines. A recurring event was the Stray Dog Salon, where singers, songwriters and writers came together to explore a theme with passion and irreverence. On Friday, December 1, a Stray Dog Salon will be held in her honour, with proceeds to the Mary Sue Rankin Emerging Artist Award. The venue is another creative hotspot, Gallery 345.
The evening features music by the Stray Dog Ensemble: host, soul-stirring singer-songwriter david sereda, (piano) with David Gray on guitar (Parachute Club, Soul Stew), Colleen Allen on saxes (Laila Biali, Molly Johnson), Tyler Wagler on bass (The Human Rights, Alysha Brilla) and Keira McArthur on cello (Lars Jensen, Ken Dunn). Anne Michaels, poet laureate of Toronto, will read. Composer/bassist David Woodhead will premiere a new work dedicated to Mary Sue Rankin, accompanied by Fern Lindzon on piano. More guests will be announced as they join the line-up check our Putting On the Dog event page on facebook for updates https://www.facebook.com/events/181560875728660/

About the Mary Sue Rankin Emerging Artist Award for Graduates of Art and Art History, a Joint Program between Sheridan and the University of Toronto Mississauga
Toronto gallery owner Mary Sue Rankin was the Chair of the Art and Art History Program Advisory Committee for over a decade (2002-2013), making many contributions to the committee and the program. She worked in many ways to support the program and its faculty and staff as well as committee governance such as board renewal. Ms. Rankin invited other gallery owners and art collectors to join the committee creating a robust sounding board of commercial gallery professionals and clients.
At the Edward Day Gallery, Ms. Rankin hired several Art and Art History Program graduates as her assistants and she recommended the hiring of AAH grads to her colleagues in other galleries, giving a number of our grads an important start in their professional careers. She graciously hosted our students at her gallery many times for professional practice talks, and also offered her gallery to groups of our senior students for exhibitions. But what gave Ms. Rankin the most pleasure was engaging Art and Art History students in a discussion of their in-process or finished artwork.
Ms. Rankins formative years were in the small mining town of Nephton, Ontario where her deep love of nature was forged. She later moved with her family to Peterborough and then attended Western University where she earned a Bachelors of Science. While in London, she became active in the community, assisting at a group home. She remained socially aware and involved throughout her life. An artist to her core, Ms. Rankin, was one of the founders of the Edward Day Gallery which opened in Kingston in 1992. The gallery moved to Toronto in 1996 where Ms. Rankin and her co-director Kelly McCray worked together for many years promoting local, national and international contemporary art and artists. Ms. Rankin was committed to sharing the gallery space to support the music community and hosted hundreds of concerts and other events.
