August: Osage County
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, an epic family drama which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for best play, is coming to Port Townsend. The play was written by Tracy Letts.
The production is a project of The One-Time Players, a new community theater group founded just for this occasion by David Hillman, Michelle Hensel and Jennifer Nielsen. The play will open February 1st in the Port Townsend High School auditorium. Proceeds will benefit the PTHS drama program.
This unusual play tells the story of the Westons, a large extended clan that comes together at their rural Oklahoma homestead when the alcoholic patriarch disappears.
"It's exciting to create a new venue for local community theater," says Hillman, who is directing the play. "Every group has something different to offer. We're hoping to create something memorable, and are thrilled that our work will benefit PTHS drama.
"As a director, part of what attracts me to this play is that it is a great play for actors," says Hillman. "It has thirteen parts, all wonderfully written. And it's an ensemble piece. It's like a symphony."
The cast includes Lawrason Driscoll, Emily Huntingford, Michelle Hensel, Beth McHugh, Sally Talbert, Don White, Jennifer Nielsen, James Jackson, Rosa Linda Davies, Jim Guthrie, Judith Glass Collins, Peter Wiant and Sam Cavallaro.
Set design is by Terry Tennesen. Costumes are by Ginger McNew. Set construction is by Jim Guthrie and his shop crew. Sheila Khalov is doing publicity. The producer is Monica Mick'Hager.
Ian Keith, technical wizard, has performed numerous upgrades on theater lighting in the auditorium. Repairs have been performed. New light bars have been installed. The system is now computerized. All of this will benefit not only this show, but future PTHS Drama productions.
The show runs for three weekends, February 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17. Fridays and Saturdays are at 7 pm, and Sundays are at 2:30 pm.
The production contains adult content and language and is recommended for ages 16+. Herbal cigarettes will be smoked during the show.
Tickets are $12, and $6 for students and seniors.
