Share this event:

At 3 PM on Sunday, June 5th, 2022, at the Hayti Heritage Center, the Durham Symphony will present A Celebration of the Harlem Renaissance and Dance Music Through the Centuries. Directed by Maestro William Henry Curry, this program will explore the remarkable flowering of African American artistry in music, literature, and theatre that took America (and the world) by storm in the 1920s and 30s and still influences our culture.  We will feature works by African American composers Eubie Blake, William Grant Still, and Florence Price as well as selections from George Gershwin and from Jerome Kerns groundbreaking musical Showboat. The second half of our concert will be a sonic feast of vibrant and popular dance music from the 18th century to the present.  Selections will include works by Mozart and Delibes as well as waltzes and polkas by Johann and Josef Strauss and dance music from the musical Cats.
