Mental Health At The Intersections: Race, Class, Gender in LGBTQI2-S Communities
Mental Health at the Intersections was created to enhance the
fields understanding of working members of LGBTQI2-S communities beyond single-identity strategies. A day-long immersive and interactive experience, participants will be in a co-learning environment to help challenge internal beliefs and help new practices emerge. Centered on the experiences of LGBTQI2-S consumers this space uses their stories as the platform for identifying blind-spots in our practice with LGBTQIA2-S communities experiencing multiple forms of oppression and helps move to more holistic approaches and interventions. We are excited to have you join us for this unique and expansive approach to addressing mental health needs in the 21st Century.

Panels

Cultural Pride and the LGBTQI2-S Immigrant Experience: This panel centralizes consumer experiences and stories as means to help educate clinicians on the interventions and resources available to help reinforce cultural pride when working with LGBTQI2-S and second generation immigrants.

Expanding Beyond the Binary: This session will provide participants with an overview of non-binary identities, offer first-person accounts of how clinicians level of understanding has impacted the therapeutic process and offer strategies for how to improve practice with those with non-binary identities.

Breakout Sessions

Invisible Stories and Hidden Rejections: Experiences of "Otherness" within the LGBTQI2-S Community: Low-income seniors, parents, Lesbian Transwomen, Black gay men- these groups represent the often hidden stories of rejection and isolation experienced within the LGBTQI2-S community.

Black, Queer, and Free: African Diasporic Mental Health Strategies: During the workshops, participants will be introduced to several interventions blending traditional mental health and African diasporic cultural traditions, and discuss the culturally responsive application of interventions.

Reshaping Toxic Masculinity: Addressing the Impacts Patriarchy in the LGBTQI2-S Community: During this session, participants will deconstruct patriarchy and "toxic masculinity", examine the relative research, and explore interventions to support clients with understanding how this social construct is shaping their emotional experience.

Speakers and Facilitators:

Eb. Brown, M.S.W (he/they) has developed curriculum and executed trainings for Pan- Harvard LGBTQ Conference, Northern California Kaiser Permanente, Bay Area Association of Black Social Workers, San Francisco County Human Services Agency, and Gender Spectrum on topics such as creating evidence based interventions, team building, intersectionality, LGBTQI inclusion, Queer and Trans Liberation, and leadership development. This year Eb. launched  Trans*Visible, an initiative designed to increase the visibility of Trans* trainers and their work, has created a network of over 50 transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary trainers. Shenaaz Janmohamed, LCSW is a queer femme mama who is a licensed psychotherapist and healing practitioner of Muslim South Asian descent based in Oakland CA. Shenaaz's work is deeply shaped by social justice values, queer liberation, and mindfulness practice. She holds trauma, hurt and harm as causes and conditions of systems of oppression, and works with folks to move through and heal from - ancestral, interpersonal, familial, community, organizational, systemic and collective - wounding.

Louise Monsour is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Operations Management from Ohio State University and a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from National University, where she graduated with distinction. Louise has been at the Pacific Center since 2009, first as the Director of Clinical Training and now as the Clinic Director. She was core faculty in the Counseling Psychology graduate program at JFKU and also served on the Board of Blue Oak Therapy Center for several years. Louise specializes in working with all issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity. She also provides cultural competency training for agencies and businesses that serve LGBTQ clients.

Leslie Ewing is a longtime resident of the Berkeley/Oakland area who has worked to strengthen the LGBTQ community for over twenty-five years, starting with her involvement with the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and AIDS Emergency Fund. Prior to becoming Pacific Centers Executive Director in 2008, Leslie raised community health care funding as the Development Director of Lyon-Martin Health Services. She is also a founder of the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund.

Darlene Cooper, MPH (She/Her/Hers/Darlene) is a program/project manager at heart with a focus on healthcare advocacy. She is an Oakland native. She has lived by serving the community through nonprofit and community organizing that contributed to who she is today. In the past twelve years, she has worked for several nonprofits and corporate businesses with a focus on healthcare access for LGBTQ and people of color. She has a Bachelors in Community Studies - Health Care Inequalities from the University of California, Santa Cruz and recently obtained her Master's Degree in Public Health from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She is an Alumni of Public Allies / AmeriCorps program from 2012 to 2015 and served on their Alumni Board. She has been a coach/mentor and professional development trainer for Public Allies for the past two and a half years. She has been awarded woman of the year (2013-2014) as a VIP member of the National Association of Professional Women. She is also a member of Project Management Institute - San Francisco Chapter.

DeAngela Cooks is an acclaimed workshop facilitator, professional public speaker, host, and author. Her work is grounded in social awareness and self-care, bringing passion, humor, and a generous spirit to her diverse audiences. She is deeply committed to engaging her clients in activities that encourage emotional growth and empowerment. She has a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion and an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Jana Rickerson, LCSW is an educator, mentor, consultant, and facilitator. After decades of experience in child welfare, public health and HIV services, she is currently passionate about her work with racial and gender diversity and cultural humility training, teaching the next generation of social workers, and supervising case managers who work with LGBTQ seniors. Jana brings authenticity and a strong sense of wonder and curiosity to her leadership. She has an unwavering commitment to creating safe spaces for transformational dialogue and community building, which also led her to pursue training as a facilitator with the Center for Courage & Renewal and the Public Conversations Project.

Dr. Aja Hill is a licensed clinical psychologist with UCSF's Child and Adolescent Services and a small private practice in Oakland. She provides clinical supervision, systems-level consultation, and direct clinical service to a diverse population of children, adolescents, and their families, as well as, queer/trans/gnc adults of color. Her work centers love and liberation, with a focus on resiliency, empowerment, and supporting each individual or family on their unique path towards health and wellness.

Asya Grigorieva, Ph.D. is a multicultural psychologist, who is passionate about improving the well-being and quality of life of diverse adolescents, women, older adults, and couples/relationships. Asya specializes in treating traumas, anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ and immigration-related issues, and helps couples of various constellations to have better communication and more satisfying relationships. Most individuals Asya works with have intersecting marginalized identities that are frequently not "held" in many spaces.
