Through the Lens of Gender: American Female Writers of the 20th Century
Please join Literary Affairs and Professor Charles Lynn Batten as we start our new Literary Lecture season with a series that will study four unique and compelling female voices of 20th Century American Literature. In 1855 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote to his publisher in response to the success of female writers, "America is now wholly given over to a damned mob of scribbling women, and I should have no chance of success while the public is occupied with their trash." Despite Hawthorne and other male critics women have used the novel to observe, question and transcend. The writings of Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Anita Loos, and Zora Neale Hurston each address an aspect of life in America through the lens of gender, race, class, and culture. Despite the restrictive nature of being a female writer in their time they have each left us a story for all times.
