Cluster Design: An Evolution of Wolfberry Completions in the Midland Basin
Abstract:
Objectives/Scope: This presentation will address the evolution of stage spacing and cluster design to achieve more uniform proppant placement and near-wellbore coverage in the Wolfcamp and Spraberry formations within the Midland Basin. Wells evaluated for this presentation will include proppant-traced and logged wells within Howard, Glasscock, Regan, Irion, Martin, and Upton Counties.
Methods, Procedures, Process: Completion diagnostics employing proppant tracers and subsequent spectral gamma ray logging were used to evaluate overall hydraulic fracturing effectiveness with different cluster designs for the purpose of achieving greater near-wellbore proppant coverage. The proppant tracers were injected into the proppant slurries from the start of proppant addition until flush and logged with a spectral gamma ray logging tool.
Results, Observations, Conclusions: In the area of cluster design and stage spacing, proppant placement and percent lateral coverage will be examined along with effective design strategies to overcome geological differences in the Wolfcamp and Spraberry to achieve higher proppant placement along the wellbore in each formation.
Application of Information: The data presented and the lessons learned can be used in future completion designs to optimize well placement strategies and increase hydrocarbon recoveries by increasing stimulated reservoir volume.
Bio : Matthew Perry is the Account Manager, Permian Basin for ProTechnics, A Division of Core Laboratories. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Management and Marketing degree from Texas Christian University. Matthew has been with ProTechnics for just under four years focusing his work primarily on completion optimization and production enhancement in the Wolfberry and Wolfbone plays. He lives in Midland with his wife and new baby girl.
