Life expectancy steadily climbed in the United States in the 20th
Century, going from 50 in 1900 to 78 a hundred years later. But a long life is not guaranteed. Opioid abuse, obesity and other public health threats are claiming more people at younger ages  and undermining the assumption that life expectancy will keep trending upward. If the trend turns, more young people will need to understand end-of-life care. Yet many hospice and related providers are ill-prepared to communicate to younger people who may need their services.

Austin Alley
Austin Alley is a May 2017 graduate of Northern Kentucky University and a resident of Moores Hill, Indiana.  He majored in Public Relations and minored in Marketing, receiving the Certificate of Recognition for distinguished achievement in the Department of Communications and graduating Summa Cum Laude.  With concentrations in community relations and nonprofit work, Austin sought a junior-year internship with Hospice of Cincinnati, a highly regarded local not-for-profit.  There, he gained a keen understanding of the function, promotion, and day-to-day operation of an organization based in end-of-life care.  Later on, Austin completed an internship with Hillenbrand-owned Batesville, a North American-based corporation operating in the funeral product industry.  Between these two experiences, Austin has developed a deep appreciation for the importance of pre and post-death services.

Inspired by his internship experiences, Austin created a yearlong capstone project that delved into the necessity of end-of-life care providers.  His research and PR recommendations offer an insight into the crucial role hospice providers play in our community, particularly within the millennial generation.  He hopes the combination of his research and experiences in the industry can change public perceptions about hospice care and create an enhanced awareness of end-of-life services.

Since graduating, Austin has worked full-time for Prolanthropy  a Florence-based company that assists professional athletes in making their philanthropic visions a reality.  His role as Grant Coordinator allows him to establish fundraising opportunities for the more than thirty athlete-founded nonprofits throughout the United States that Prolanthropy works with.  His own dream of working for nonprofits has become a reality, and he is excited to share his experiences and research with the community.
