Indivisible: A Burlesque Benefit for the SPLC
Feel Good Fridays is keeping up the tradition of burlesque benefits with our fifth show for a cause.
In light of recent events, we have chosen to put together a benefit for the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Who are the SPLC?
SPLC : fighting hate, teaching tolerance, and seeking justice!
The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality.
The SPLC runs Hatewatch, a blog that monitors and exposes the activities of the American radical right, Hate Map, which tracks the 917 hate groups currently operating in the US, the Southern Immigrant Freedom Initiative, which works to protect the rigths of immigrants and their children to ensure they are treated with dignity and fairness, LGBT Youth Rights & Conversion Therapy for young queer people in the Deep South, and criminal justice reform programs to ensure the dignity and humanity of those interacting with these systems.
In short, the SPLC works to aid people facing injustice due to systems of oppression and to dismantle these systems through organized action.
Following the horrific events in Charlottesville, VA earlier this month, public figures from George Clooney to Apple have donated to the SPLC. The SPLC regularly makes lists of "Most Beneficial Charities" and received a score of 97 for "Accountability and Transparency" with Charity Watch.
