Nancys NANCY is a memoir in movement created in response to Yanira Castros NANCY, a performer portrait based on Ellis that Castros company premiered in New York City in 2013. Ellis created her retrospective self-portrait - also her first solo choreography - in a New Expressive Works (N.E.W.) Residency with Fieldwork in 2014. N.E.W. presented Nancys NANCY in 2014. Seattles On the Boards NW New Works Festival and Portlands Risk/Reward Festival of New Performance both presented Elliss first solo in 2015.

In her second solo, Mid-Me, Ellis reveals whats happening with Nancys NANCY now. Inspired by middle-age malaise research, poetry and pink camouflage lingerie (The Happiness U-Curve by Brookings scholars Graham and Nikolova; Uses of the Body by Deborah Landau; and Wilderness Dreams Camo available at Rural King in Waterloo, IL), Ellis investigates her mid-western, mid-life moment in time. She shared Mid-Me as a work-in-progress at the culmination of an Alembic Artists Residency at Performance Works NW in November 2015.

Wondering what happens next, Nancy found a clue in a book she picked up shortly after the Charlie Hebdo attack in 2015. In her third and final solo, Nancy forecasts the future using Julien Blanc-Grass phrase from "Nous Sommes Charlie" as her touchstone: Nous, on va danser. This work is funded in part by support from a 2017 Regional Arts and Culture Council Project Grant, Nancys first public funding for her own work.

.....

Nancy Ellis has performed regionally, nationally and internationally with Gash/Voigt Dance Theater of St. Louis, The St. Louis Muny Opera, Yanira Castro, Maura Nguyen Donohue and Big Dance Theater/Annie-B Parson & Paul Lazar. Based in Portland since 2006, she has worked with Hand2Mouth Theatre, Tahni Holt, Dawn Stoppiello, Katherine Longstreth and more. Most recently, she performed Portrait in Boom Arts' 2016 production of Matias Umpierrez's TeatroSOLO at the Portland Art Museum; in new works by Dora Gaskill and by Stephanie Lavon-Trotter at Performance Works NW, also in 2016; and in all three phases of Linda Austins (Un)Made: the solo relay series and the last bell rings for you in 2016 and a world, a world in 2017. Nancy began making her own work in 2014, with support from a N.E.W. Residency, and presented her first solo, Nancys NANCY, at On the Boards NW New Works Festival in 2015 and at the 2015 Risk/Reward Festival of New Works in Portland. Also in 2015, Nancy was an Alembic Resident at Performance Works NW  where she developed the first draft of Mid-Me  and the recipient of a 2015 Professional Development Grant from Portlands Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC).

This evening of dance is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council, financial contributions from over 30 individuals plus in-kind support from New Expressive Works, Performance Works NW and several generous humans.
