Fritz Lang Night
107 mins. Germany (1931). Digital Projection. German w/ English subtitles.
A child murderer is on the loose in Berlin. The members of organized crime increasingly feel disturbed by the manhunt conducted by the police; they initiate their own search for the mentally disturbed killer and impose on him the death penalty. Still today, M is regarded as one of the best German films ever made. Before most of his fellow directors, Fritz Lang recognized the artistic possibilities offered by sound - as well as the internal links between sounds and images. Thus, he mangaged to make the inner feelings of the sex offender so intensely visible that at the end the viewer even feels some sympathy for him.
