***NOTICE - SUNDAY, APRIL 22 PERFORMANCE IS CANCELLED ***
Star Pocket Theatre is delighted to present its inaugural production, "The Member of the Wedding" by Carson McCullers, critically-acclaimed author of "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" and "The Ballad of the Sad Café"
"The Member of the Wedding" is Carson McCullers' theatrical adaptation of her novel of the same name, widely beloved as a treasure to the American Southern literary canon. Winner of the 1950 Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, the story focuses on an adolescent Frankie Addams as she struggles to find her place and purpose in a world that seems to constantly exclude her. In her words, Frankie is an "unjoined person". Ignored by her father and ostracized by the local girls, Frankie's only true compatriots are the family's housekeeper, Berenice Sadie Brown, and Frankie's pesky younger cousin, John Henry West. During the weekend when Frankie's brother, Jarvis, is set to be married, she fixates her affection on the couple and determines to run away with them. In her desperation to belong, Frankie hopes that the newlyweds can be what she calls "the we of me," tragically ignoring the love and unity that has been with her all along.
The play presents complex issues surrounding race, gender, and sexuality, their roles in the American South during the 20th century, and their relationships with the development of identity and intimacy. Its clever writing and sincere emotional depth shape a narrative that is gripping, dreamlike, and eerily familiar, holding up a mirror to the contemporary American South.
Tennessee Williams said of Carson McCullers, "The only real writer the South ever turned out was Carson... she was no angel, ya know... But she had infinite wisdom... I had read 'The Member of the Wedding' that year (1946) and I considered her the worlds greatest living writer."
Join us as we bring Carson McCullers' work to life in this intimate exploration of the pain of exclusion and the humor of adolescence.
